Kindergarten Curriculum
Integrated Language Arts- The Kindergarten Reading and English program promotes effective oral and written communication. In Language Arts, kindergarten students will develop phonemic awareness through oral blending, segmentation, sight word recognition, spelling relationships, and handwriting letter formation. Students will develop an appreciation for literature, poetry and the writing process.
Math- Kindergarten students will begin to link concrete ideas to abstract math concepts. Students will explore numeration, logical reasoning, and problem solving through manipulatives and games. Key areas of study will include patterning, numeral recognition, counting, measuring, place value, number concepts: addition, subtraction, time on the hour, money, graphing and calendar.
Science- In science, Kindergarteners will be introduced to the research process. This includes the generation and testing of ideas; prediction, measurement, data collection and representation; evaluation of sources of information; collaborative investigation; interpretation and communication of findings; evaluation and verification of findings and considerations relating to the social context of research. Students will begin to experience the world around them using their five senses. They will explore and investigate living things, matter, weather, seasons, and the Solar System.
Social Studies- Students will understand their place in society and how to be a responsible citizen. Students will appreciate similarities and differences among various cultures in the United States. Students will learn how technology has changed the way people live and work.
Foreign Language-Exploratory French for Kindergarten is designed for students to explore basic French words in various settings. Students learn basic words for the colors, numbers, shapes, and days of the week, body parts, foods, clothing, places, weather conditions, greetings, family, animals, classroom objects and house objects. Students learn the proper way to greet people in French. Students learn to count 1- 20 in French. Students experience the French culture through songs and games.
Art-Students are introduced to four elements of art - line, shape, color and texture. Students will complete elementary projects that allow them to use their imagination and creativity but with a concentration on incorporating these elements of art into their works of art.
Technology-Computers are used to reinforce and enrich skills in math, geography, science and language arts. Problem solving and logical thought skills are reinforced through the use of appropriate software. Graphic and desktop publishing programs are used to design and publish documents.
Physical Education-The students will demonstrate an understanding of movement that fosters cooperation and sportsmanship. The students will be encouraged to give their best effort at all times.
